Quatre adolescents, aged between 14 and 16 years, have been placed in police custody following a sequence of alarming homophobic assaults, as reported by ICI Gironde. These incidents, which have come to light since the beginning of March, have resulted in the identification of seven victims.
The first attack occurred on March 6 in Blaye, where a 37-year-old man was brutally assaulted by a group of individuals wearing masks and dressed in black. In the same night, another victim was targeted a short distance away in Saint-Ciers-sur-Gironde. Subsequent nights saw similar violent acts in Bourg-sur-Gironde, Saint-Martin-Lacaussade, and again in Blaye.
The suspects were apprehended on March 17, and the authorities are now actively looking for potential accomplices. Investigators have noted that the assailants recorded their violent actions, which could serve as vital evidence as they delve deeper into these troubling events.
Experts emphasize the need for increased vigilance and community awareness regarding such hate crimes. According to Thomas Felici, sociologist at l'Université de Bordeaux, “Ce type d'agression témoigne d'une violence systémique qui doit être combattue par tous.” (This type of aggression reflects a systemic violence that must be fought by all.)
As the investigation unfolds, it is important for victims to come forward and for communities to unite against intolerance and discrimination.
